What is a "K" Rating?

A "K" rating is a rating that is utilized by the U.S. Dept. of State and U.S. Dept. of Defense. in measuring the capability of a vehicle barrier. Recently ASTM has introduced a new rating system that may replace the "K" rating system completely. The ASTM system utilizes more vehicle types and speeds to allow for more variations in site situations.

K12 indicates that the barrier will withstand a 15,000 lb (6810 kg) vehicle traveling 50 mph (80 kph).
K8 = 15,000 lb (6810 kg) vehicle traveling 40 mph (65 kph)
K4 = 15,000 lb (6810 kg) vehicle traveling 30 mph (48 kph)

Pass = Maximum penetration of the cargo bed is 1 meter or less.

K = Maximum barrier impact speed rating.
