Hiram M. Chittenden Locks

Sloan Security Group (SSG) designed and installed ornamental iron security fences and gates to prevent unauthorized access to the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks – Seattle’s second most visited tourist site, a working botanical gardens and registered national historic site. Of particular significance, SSG custom designed and installed a unique 10’x43’ 5,400 lb K-12 rated operated crash gate (meant to withstand a 15,000 lb vehicle traveling 50 mph). Other highlights included building ornamental iron fence enclosures on piers, spillway and docks, and installing a 36’x 10’ double swing iron gate for emergency access to the locks. The project was successfully delivered on a 90-day schedule despite music festivals, 100,000 daily visitors to the site, and tight spaces. Because of extensive unmarked and fragile underground site utilities, SSG exclusively utilized vacuum excavation to excavate fence posts and gate footing. To ensure success, SSG coordinated daily work sequences with USACE, the site botanist, site machinists, and the general contractor while provided daily reports and scheduling.
